NATIONAL COMMISSION ON HUMAN RIGHTS

The body was set up in 2015 by a law that gives the commission office the power to take action on its own, if human rights abuses continue in any part of the country.
  • Can visit the jails and assess the conditions of the people imprisoned there.
  • Can review laws and recommend new rules.
  • It can help the Pakistani state in fulfilling its international obligations and preparing reports.
  • In case of any incident of human rights violation, it can intervene directly and order an inquiry.
  • The commission has the same powers as the Civil court.

SINDH HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION

Like the national human rights commission, the human rights commission was to be set up at the provincial level, but so far only the human rights commission has been set up in Sindh province, who has the authority to do everything at the provincial level, what the national commission does at the national level.

NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR THE DIGNITY OF WOMEN

The commission has been working since 2000 to protect,promote and achieve women's rights and gender quality.Commission members and chairpersons are nominated for three years.New members and chairpersons are appointed every three years.

COMMISSION WORK:-

  • Review of government policies,programs and initiatives
  • Review of laws and regulations affecting women at the federal level
  • Proposing new laws to eliminate gender inequality, recommending changes or repeal of old laws
  • Support and encourage research on women's issues
  • Monitoring and facilitating the implementation of the international covenant on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women
  • Suggestions for signing and ratifying international agreement
  • Measures taken to address violation of women's rights and oversight of established institutions
  • Dialogue and liaison with NGOs, individuals and experts
  • Liaison with commissions and agencies in other countries to work on women's rights nationally, regionally and internationally
  • Efforts to obtain financial resources

COMMISSION POWERS:-

  • The federal government may request information and reports from civil society, autonomous and relevant agencies.
  • Under the Civil Procedure Code 1908, the commission has the powers of a Civil Court.
  • The commission may inspect any jail or sub-jail with prior permission from the provincial governments.
  • Obtaining information, statistics and documents from federal sources.
So far, at the provincial level, the Punjab Commission for women's rights, the Sindh Commission for Women's Rights and  the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Commission for Women's Rights have come into existence.The scope of these provincial commissions is almost the same as that of the National Commission.Punjab Commission for Women's Rights has launched a helpline on which complaints of violence against women can be lodged.
